Mary in the Piazza di San Marco with the Basilica di San Marco behind her. To the right just out of the picture is the Campanile, Venice's tallest building at 323 feet high. This is a relatively new structure, replacing the 900 year old original that on July 14, 1902, with only a few warning cracks, gently collapsed to the ground in front of a watching crowd. Remarkably, no one was hurt.

A view of the Grand Canal from one of the "water-bus" stops. This one is near the train station and is one of the first places where an arriving visitor can catch a vaporetto, or water-bus. Other modes of transportation are a motoscafo, a faster version of the vaporetto, and fast, but expensive, water taxis.

A view of another of Venice's many canals. Most canals are only a few feet deep. Periodically, they will seal the canal off from the rest, and clear out debris and sludge from the bottom.

Several gondolas are traveling together while being serenaded by a singer on one of the boats. A popular activity for tourists, the flotilla will travel through several canals while enjoying Italian songs.

Another view of Venetian buildings, this time near where the Grand Canal widens and joins the wide Canal San Marco. The Piazza San Marco and Basilica San Marco are just out of the picture to the right.

Venice also has several larger islands which are not connected by bridges. Across the wide Canal della Giudecca is the Isola della Giudecca (Giudecca Island). Prominent in this picture is the Santissimo Redentore and Convento del Redentore, a church and convent on an island accessible only by boat.

Mary enjoying our gondola ride. While we were enjoying our ride, we struck up a conversation with the couple next to us. It certainly is a small world - they live only 40 miles from us, and here we meet 6,000 miles away!

Sunset on the Grand Canal from the Rialto Bridge.
